The goal of this course is to teach you the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.

This 8 hour course includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals as well as range rules, shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions, cleaning the pistol, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet.

Students will take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate.

  • Participants will learn NRA's rules for safe gun handling.
  • Participants will become familiar with firearm components.
  • Participants will become familiar with ammunition components.
  • Participants will learn shooting fundamentals and range rules.
  • Participants will shoot from a bench rest position, and two handed standing positions.
  • Participants will learn continued skill development.
  • 8 hours of classroom instruction is provided.
